5. Cleans and arpeggios

Cleans and arpeggios: why they expose everything, noise and dynamics control, DI and stereo handling.

What we’re after here and why. Cleans and arpeggios are the most exposed part of a recording: with no distortion to cover them, you hear everything (noises, frets, uneven dynamics). The goal is to capture clean parts that are clean, even and with body, adding clarity and contrast against the distorted sections.

The DI is worth even more on cleans

On cleans, much of the character comes from effects you’ll want to try out later: chorus, delay, reverb, compression. If you record the DI (section 1), you can change all of that without re-recording.

🟠 Better to set it now· in recording

The final clean sound depends heavily on effects that are decided in the mix; recording the DI keeps all that freedom. Committing the clean at tracking ties your hands.

Noise and dynamics control at the source

With no distortion there’s nowhere to hide mistakes:

  • Noise: hum from single-coil pickups, string scrapes, amp-sim breathing. Reduce it at the source (posture, hand muting, a gentle gate). Better little noise now than fighting it in the mix.
  • Even dynamics: on arpeggios, make all the strings sound at an even volume (pick/finger technique). A gentle compressor helps, but the foundation is the hand.

Tuning: even more critical

🔴 Set this NOW· in recording

On cleans, slightly off tuning is heard crystal clear (especially on open chords and arpeggios with open strings). Tune and check often.

Stereo on cleans

Depending on the intent:

  • Intimacy (a guitar accompanying the vocal in a verse) → mono, in the center or barely to one side.
  • Width (an arpeggio that “opens” the song) → double it (two takes L/R, like rhythm) or use a chorus/widening in the mix.

What you should NOT chase yet

Clean / arpeggio examplePending — this one is on you

For the examples I need, in prodmus_frontend/public/audio/guitarra/:

  • limpio-arpegio-DI.wav — a clean arpeggio of ~4 bars (e.g. open chords Em–C–G–D), even and noise-free (raw DI).
  • limpio-arpegio-helix.wav and/or -biasfx.wav — the same, with your clean tone (ideally with a touch of chorus/reverb to show the character).

WAV 24/48, mono (DI), no clip. With that I’ll show intimacy (mono) vs width (doubled L/R).

Quick path — a clean take that’s tidy

Quick path

  1. Tune carefully. Healthy level (section 1).
  2. Record the clean DI. Play evenly: all the arpeggio notes at the same volume.
  3. Listen in solo: any noises, clacks, notes that jump out? Redo if needed.
  4. Decide mono (intimacy) or doubled L/R (width) according to the arrangement.
  5. The effects (chorus/delay/reverb) you try in the mix on the DI.

Expected result

Expected result

A clean take that’s even, in tune and noise-free, with the DI saved to choose effects later. It doesn’t need its final chorus/reverb yet nor to fight for its place with the distorted guitars: that’s mixing and arrangement. If it sounds tidy and musical in solo, you’re done.
